About Amaggunju Dance
The Amaggunju dance, a cherished tradition of the Baganda people in Uganda, is a lively royal performance that began around 1582 during the reign of Kabaka Mulondo in the Buganda Kingdom. Created by Ggunju of the Butiiko clan to keep the infant king Jjemba from crying, this dance features energetic movements, vibrant drumming from instruments like the Namunjoloba, Empuunyi, Engalabi, and Embuutu, and the distinctive jingle of ankle bells. Originally exclusive to the palace, its dynamic steps and joyful rhythms now grace weddings, coronations, and festivals, embodying Baganda unity and cultural pride.
